NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) was established as a Special Health Authority in October 2005. Its remit is to provide a reliable, efficient supply of blood, organs and associated services to the NHS.

Operating divisions of the NHSBT include National Blood Service, UK Transplant and Bio Products Laboratory (BPL). National Blood Service is responsible for managing the blood supply in England and North Wales, needing nearly 8,000 donations of blood every day to make sure that patients get the treatments they need.  It also provides a range of other services to hospitals. UK Transplant manages the National Transplant Database and is responsible for the matching and allocation of donor organs, as well as raising awareness of organ donation. BPL provides health professionals throughout the world with high quality plasma-derived products.

To demonstrate its commitment to providing family-friendly initiatives and encouraging new parents to return to work after maternity leave, the NHSBT offers its staff the opportunity request Busy Bees Childcare Vouchers.

The organisation launched the Busy Bees scheme in April 2003, when it was known as National Blood Authority, and then as NHSBT in April 2006. A number of parents are now requesting Childcare Vouchers in exchange for a part of their salary. As Vouchers are exempt from tax and National Insurance Contributions, parents can save hundreds of pounds on the cost of their childcare each year.

One parent who takes advantage of the scheme is Amanda Whatley, a member of the marketing team at NHSBT’s Southampton base.

“Childcare vouchers were a considerable factor in my decision to accept my position with NHSBT last November,” said Amanda. “When I joined, I worked a two and a half day week, so I used a childminder for my daughter. I introduced the childminder to the Voucher scheme and she now recognises these as a method of payment.

“My daughter now attends a nursery three days a week and they also accept Busy Bees Childcare Vouchers, so the transition was easy and there was peace of mind in changing childcare arrangements.”

Amanda concludes: “I am really pleased that the NHSBT offers Childcare Vouchers to employees and I know that compared to some other schemes, Busy Bees is more flexible. It really does help parents return to the workplace and ease the financial costs.”

Busy Bees Childcare Vouchers can be used to pay for registered or approved childcare, including nurseries, nannies, au pairs, pre and after school clubs and holiday schemes.

Employers save on National Insurance Contributions by offering the scheme and it helps with the recruitment and retention of staff.
